Study Finds Total Joint Patients Recover Safely at Home

It has been common for patients who live alone to be discharged by a physician to a rehabilitation center after a total joint replacement surgery. However, patients who live alone can recover safely and effectively at home following total hip or total knee replacement, according to a study presented at the 2017 Annual Meeting of American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

The study revealed that there were no increased complications for patients living alone and no significant differences in functional outcomes or reported pain following surgery. The study also reports increased savings and satisfaction.

The payoff was significant. Savings per patient from a home stay, versus a visit to a skilled nursing facility, was $10,776 per patient.
